My wife Kim and I jumped into the holistic pet food business last year in May and it has been a whirlwind ride. Before we purchased the Barkery we were always scoping out the best food and treats for our growing brood of animals - one dog and four cats. We wanted the very best food for them and started out on the commercial pet food side of the slate. We talked with the representatives from all the leading brands and they dutifully informed us of all the good ingredients their products contained glucosamine and chondroitin, to name a few. Oddly though, they didn't talk much about the make up of their foods. They didn't differentiate between animal-based protein and grain-based protein, for instance. These are important questions when you are looking for good quality pet foods. Initially, we kept our pets on the leading commercial brands opting from one and then another, but not really being very satisfied. We discovered the Barkery about two years ago and began shopping at the store and learning about animal nutrition and the importance of having a good balance of animal proteins and wholesome ingredients to make up the key ingredients in any food formulation. After being a customer for over a year we had a chance to buy the business and we did. It has been a great and challenging learning experience ever since and we continue to learn every day.
